To maintain this status, and fulfill two key requirements, each year arboriculture students sponsor Arbor Day activities and events sharing their passion for trees and their many benefits to the entire campus community.
Her idea of an outdoor space came to fruition in 2014 when the Horticulture Club built an incredible outdoor space that includes a landscaped garden and patio with tables, a water feature and landscape lighting. In addition to this, Dr. Lavis’s ultimate goal is that the landscape around Throckmorton be so spectacular that people will know this is where students learn horticulture.
In addition to the outdoor space, in 2015, Dr. Lavis lead the committee that updated the Throckmorton lobby, it now houses the first green wall on campus.
Since 2003, she has served as an advisor to the Horticulture Club and co-coaches the Landscape Contracting Team for the annual National Collegiate Landscape Competition. This event hosts 29 horticultural competitive events and the largest green industry career fair in the country. The team took 8th out of 63 teams last March at Mississippi State.
