Department of Horticulture and Natural Resources with a teaching and extension specialist appointment. Dr. Lavis has worked closely with students teaching and advising in various capacities since
1990.
She teaches Arboriculture, Landscape Maintenance, team teaches the Business of Landscape Contracting and the Pre-internship and Professionalism course. In 1998, she partnered with the Irrigation
Association to develop the department’s first landscape irrigation course, Landscape Irrigation Systems. Approximately eight years ago, she joined Drs. Bremer, Fry and Keeley to develop an online
course, Water Issues in the Lawn and Landscape.
Dr. Lavis has been recognized both on campus and nationally. In 2013, she was recognized with the American Horticultural Society Teaching Award and the Irrigation Association Educator of the Year; in
2014, the Kansas State Presidential Advising Award and the International Society of Arboriculture Alex L. Shigo Award for Excellence in Arboricultural Education, and most recently she was recognized
as the College of Agriculture Faculty of the Spring 2016 semester, all awards were student nominated.
Along with her arboriculture students, in 2013, Kansas State achieved the Arbor Day Foundation recognition of becoming a, Tree Campus USA. To maintain this status, and fulfill two key requirements,
each year arboriculture students sponsor Arbor Day activities and events sharing their passion for trees and their many benefits to the entire campus community.
Her idea of an outdoor space came to fruition in 2014 when the Horticulture Club built an incredible outdoor space that includes a landscaped garden and patio with tables, a water feature and
landscape lighting. In addition to this, Dr. Lavis’s ultimate goal is that the landscape around Throckmorton be so spectacular that people will know this is where students learn horticulture.
In addition to the outdoor space, in 2015, Dr. Lavis lead the committee that updated the Throckmorton lobby, it now houses the first green wall on campus.
Since 2003, she has served as an advisor to the Horticulture Club and co-coaches the Landscape Contracting Team for the annual National Collegiate Landscape Competition. This event hosts 29
horticultural competitive events and the largest green industry career fair in the country. The team took 8th out of 63 teams last March at Mississippi State. In the areas of her expertise, students
have earned 1st place in Irrigation Design, three-times; 3rd place twice in Irrigation Installation and in the top five, four times; 1st in Irrigation Troubleshooting and three-times in the top
three; six times, students placed in the top five in Arboricultural Techniques, and1st in Landscape Plant Install and several times in the top 10, against 60+ schools. She likes to say, “her students
